چکیده

We introduce a new virtual environment (VE) called SQUARELAND, consisting of a 10×10 block maze, which allows for all kinds of investigations in human wayfinding. It enables researchers to quickly implement experiments on indoorand outdoor wayfinding, including variations of route length, route complexity, availability of landmarks, etc. The basic setup was programmed with the freeware GoogleSketchUp. We would like to invite the spatial cognition community to adopt this standardized and highly controllable research tool or at least parts of it, since this could improve comparability and reproducibility of different effects in wayfinding/navigation.

SQUARELAND 2.0: A flexible and realistic virtual environment for investigating cognitive processes in human wayfinding

We introduce the new version of our virtual environment (VE) SQUARELAND. As its predecessor it enables researchers to create human wayfinding experiments with variations in route length and complexity, as well as in the availability of route information and landmarks. A newly developed aspect is that test participants can be given active movement control. Now it also is much easier to create ex...

Wayfinding characteristics and familiarity indexes in an urban environment

Many people are encountered with finding the best way to reach to their destination. One definition for wayfinding is “the act of travelling to the destination by continuous processes of making route-choices whilst evaluating previous spatial decisions against stable cognition of the environment.  General understanding and keen appraisal of the environment can aid decision-making process of how...

Cognitive principles of schematisation for wayfinding assistance

People often need assistance to successfully perform wayfinding tasks in unfamiliar environments. Nowadays, a huge variety of wayfinding assistance systems exist. All these systems intend to present the needed information for a certain wayfinding situation in an adequate presentation. Some wayfinding assistance systems utilise findings for the field of cognitive sciences to develop and design c...

Individual differences in spatial cognition and hypermedia navigation

One mental ability crucial for navigation, both in the real world and in a v i r t u a l environment, is spatial cognition. This review will discuss individual differences in spatial cognition and wayfinding; and how these differences could effect n a v i-gation in a virtual environment. Other human aspects, as cognitive strategies and personality factors, related to navigation and the use of c...

Working Memory in Wayfinding - A Dual Task Experiment in a Virtual City

This study examines the working memory systems involved in human wayfinding. In the learning phase, 24 participants learned two routes in a novel photorealistic virtual environment displayed on a 220° screen while they were disrupted by a visual, a spatial, a verbal, or-in a control group-no secondary task. In the following wayfinding phase, the participants had to find and to "virtually walk" ...
